Progress, Where are you?

This week coming up will be my spring break and my "official" start at fundraising. I've been working and putting all my tips toward my fundraising, it's not much as I am a hostess but it's something. Also, for a month I will be accepting donations for a garage sale to help raise even more. $6000 here I come!! Fingers crossed!

Do and Don't

Today in one of my classes we went over something that I hadn't even thought of yet for when studying/ volunteering abroad, a lot of do and don't. So, here we go....

• Photocopy everything--passport, or other ID, credit cards, insurance proof, etc.
• Travel light and appropriate
• Make sure your personal insurance covers you
• For things such as your credit cards, let the banks and credit card companies know where you are going and for how long
• Learn local languages, especially basic local phrases--Hello. Where am I? Where is..? Where is the bathroom? (you know what I mean)
• Learn customs of the country (trust me, this is one of the most important!)
• Research the region you will be in, if possible talk to locals before your trip
• Keep money in your front or inner pockets to avoid being pick-pocketed (including your passport)
• Travel with light amounts of cash when in public
• Know exchange rate & be comfortable calculating currency (look up spot rates, the currency changes constantly in other countries)
• Get a local phone and sim card

For safety...

• Know emergency numbers
• Cooperate with local authorities
• Let someone know where you are going and for how long
• Try to travel with a local (this could keep you from being ripped off, or even better, kidnapped!)
• Only used marked taxis
• Avoid unlit areas
• Stay at well traveled & established accommodations
• My favorite tip! If the local authorities are trying to rip you off, say you work for the American Embassy (or the country you're from)

The greatest advice though was BE POLITE AND CALM!!! in every situation. 

And last but not least EXPLORE WHERE YOU ARE!!

Costa Cause begins!

Hey everyone!
I'm Ashley and I'm a Global Studies/ Human Rights student at Arizona State University. I had to find an internship before my graduation in 2014 and this is how I came across International Student Volunteers. They are currently sending volunteers to 8 different countries where volunteers help with programs in community development, wildlife conservation, and children's programs. The volunteers perform in tasks anywhere from helping to bulid schools, homes and hospitals to projects of sustainable development to creating programs that will shape generations for years to come.

Okay, so now let me introduce you to Costa Cause.
I started this blog so my sponsers could see how their donations are going to be used and where I am in my fundraising.

I  will be going to Costa Rica in the summer of 2013 and by that time have to reach my goal of at least $6,000. I plan to do the fundraising somewhat in phases. I'm not positive on what they are yet but this is a start.
